We pride ourselves on living minimally, so when we stumbled upon a local brand called @helenalaneskincare, we were instantly smitten. Our Owner, Ranya Dube, spent years living abroad in the UK with access to a wide selection of never ending high end skin care products. The problem was, we would always find a flaw with them. Whether it be rashes, redness, allergic reactions, none of them were top grade, and all of the products were labeled “All Natural” to boot! Fast forward to today when Ranya returned to the Sea-to-Sky, and discovered Squamish based company @helenalane . Having sensitive skin, she was pessimistic to try something new, but nonetheless took the leap, and has never looked back. With countless compliments, and constant comments on her glow, she is a forever loyal customer to this brand. Three years later, 40 has never looked so good. The “fruit” from our hard work! One of the workshop participants suggested eating canned peaches 🍑 with ice cream and we can confirm, it’s a winner! Lazy person’s dream dessert. We will be holding a tomato canning workshop shortly and it’s safe to say that by this time next year, we will have a whole pantry of local foods ready for the upcoming winter. Ok so we had to post this because we officially think that this is the best sandwich on 🌏! Some would call this a vegan grilled cheese but we prefer to just call it what it is: A cashew & lemon grilled sandwich. What you’ll need for the patty: - 1 cup or raw cashews* - 1/2 cup of tapioca flour - 1 tbsp of garlic powder - 2 lemons or limes (approx. 4 tbsp) - 1 tbsp of apple 🍎 cider vinegar or any vinegar you have - 3 tbsp of nutritional yeast - 1 cup of water - 3 tbsp of Dijon mustard - 2 garlic cloves - Salt to taste - Any oil for frying What you’ll need for the rest of the sandwich: - 2 slices of bread (preferably sourdough)** - Tomatoes, avocados, carrots or whatever is in your fridge. - Garlic paste, mayonnaise or Dijon mustard, balsamic vinegar (anything to moisten that lovely bread) - Onions fried in balsamic vinegar and cane sugar (if you can be bothered) Method: - Blend all patty ingredients in blender and then pour into hot pan with a tiny bit of oil. - Pour roughly half a cm of the mix until it covers the whole pan and cook slowly until little bubbles appear throughout the patty. If you are using a large pan, cutting it in half to flip it makes it easier. - Once this is cooked, add to your bread and veggies like you would if it was cheese. - In the same or in a separate pan, slowly grill the bread until golden brown. And then enjoy! We heard someone say that this is better than a regular grill cheese and we think the same. *Soak these for 2 hours. **Please note: only the best bread will do for this sandwich so we recommend going to @talltreebakery (Squamish) or @200degreesbakery (Whistler) and don’t forget to bring your bag when you go grab it. Local Goods Company is collaborating with the awesome Chirp CoKitchen in Function Junction to offer the first of our 2018 workshops. Our first cooking seminar will be Peach Canning, taking place at Chirp CoKitchen ‪next Monday‬ the 27th from 6-9pm. $35 for 7 quarts of BC Peaches if you have your own jars and $45 if you need us to provide these for you. Just finished packing some Pink Grapefruit  Dishwashing soap. Filling soap by hand is an art form that we have yet to master but our local soap makers aka @becleannaturally are pros at doing this. Every step and every action has to be well planned to make the process as efficient as possible because at the end of the day, our company competes with businesses who not only make the soap with machines, but they also use these to package their products. For the last 2 years, our company has been filming our local diversified farm, @laughingcroworganics. Watching these two in action has been one the most educative and enriching experience of our lives. Often, we don't think about where our food comes from or the work that goes into growing it. The dedication and knowledge that Kerry & Andrew possess has been pretty inspiring, to say the least. A while back, we attended a foraging workshop with Michelle Nelson - @therurbanist - where we learned about how we can use what naturally grows around us to feed and heal ourselves. Her book, The Urban Homesteading Cookbook, focuses on ways we can do this while keeping a healthy balance with the Earth. One thing she speaks about is ways of preserving food so it can be eaten at a later date.  This, has been one of our goals for a long time - eating local produce all year round while re-using the glass each year to reduce our waste. We are currently talking to farmers & canning/fermenting  pros  but as we'd like to hold these once a month in Squamish and Whistler, we need as many people as possible to take part so if you know anyone who does this already, please send them our way. This is the end product from our infamous soak 🥛. Milk can be made from pretty much anything and although you can strain it for using in coffee, it’s not really necessary. It can be added to granola, smoothies, sauces or can be drunk straight up! The milk pictured was made using the following: - Cashews: 3/4 Cup (soaked overnight) - Sesame Seeds: 1/4 Cup (soaked overnight) - Dates: 5 (Medjool) - Maple Syrup: 1 Tbsp - Purified Water: 4 Cups - Vanilla: 1 Tbsp - Cinnamon: 1 Tbsp INSTRUCTIONS: - Put ingredients in a blender. - Blend :) Enjoy! A day in the life of a soaker 🌱! So did we ever think we would be soaking beans and nuts to make milk every week? Definitely not but we’ve learned things that made us realize we had to start doing this. Whether it’s the plastic lining the food cans we eat from, to the additives and preservatives that come in ready-made foods/milks, these are a few of the reasons we started doing this. And believe it or not, it’s so easy. It’s all about planning ahead! Every two or three days, this scenario takes place in our households. You have the beans, which will be added to whatever we’re cooking that week, the milk ingredients (this weeks is cashew and sesame seeds which is great for coffee) and hemp and sunflowers for the weekly dip that usually gets added to sandwiches or gets eaten with veggies/bread. We let the soak start in the morning before we leave for work or at night, before we go to bed. 1. The beans just need a bit of stock, salt & pepper and then they can be simmered for half an hour to two hours depending on the bean. They then can be eaten this way or added to anything you’re cooking. 2. The milk is simply 4 cups of purified water, 5 dates, 2 Tbsp of Maple Syrup (optional), 1 Tbsp of vanilla (optional), 1 Tsp of Cinnamon (optional) and blend. This will keep for 3 days and is a great base for smoothies. 3. Last on the list is the dip that is filled with tons of protein! Add a cup of purified water, 2 lemons, 3 Tbsp of nutritional yeast, 1 Tsp of salt, 1 Tbsp of garlic salt (optional) and blend. Note: the reason we used purified water is that it makes our recipes last longer. The same goes if you make homemade creams. Enjoy! Our community🌎. Be conscious🌿. Be conscientious 🌿.
Being surrounded by nature every day is probably the main reason why we are so motivated to give our customers choices that will give the 🌏 a break. One of the really interesting things we’ve learned by starting this business is where food is grown around the world 🌎. Most people don’t know this but in British Columbia/Canada we grow hazelnuts, quinoa, rice, einkorn, garlic, goji berries and so many other foods that we currently import from the other side of the world. Our company has different polices for each staple we sell but when it comes to nuts, we currently try to balance choosing options grown closer to home with costs which isn't ideal but we hope to change this with time. We are looking at how, in the long term, we can support more Canadian farmers even if their prices are much higher than their national and international competitors. The more we grow, the more we will have room to offset costs to be able to do this. And on that note we’d like to remind everyone to support their local farmers and most importantly, to not waste the food they work so tirelessly to grow for us. Our community🌎. Be conscious🌿. Running a business like ours can sometimes be overwhelming and then you hear from your customers and realize that all the hard work is worth it! We had a client buying soap from us yesterday and he let us know that he'd be re-using his old dish soap bottle & pump and that he just wanted a refill for it. Might sound like a small thing to do but then you think, what if all households in the Sea-to-Sky did this. That could potentially keep 50 000 bottles from going to landfill! When we add up all the small actions, we find that they create huge change so don't ever think that it doesn't matter because it seems so small. Here's to preserving our Earth and our Community.
